Content and Language Integrated learning is a term that describes learning another content subject, such as physics or chemistry, through the medium of a foreign language and learning a foreign language by studying a content-based subject. Importance of CLIL in the teaching-learning process: Diversity of language and the need for communication are considered central issues in CLIL. ●With English as the main language, other languages will likely disappear. But the use of other languages is also a part of the process. ● The need for communication skills in the language learning process even arises. ●Language plays an important role in the courses of studies. Attention must be given to the training of teachers and the development of frameworks and methods that will improve the quality of language education. ●Bilingualism and language education have a clear vision in the teaching-learning process. Working of CLIL: The main basis of CLIL is that Content subjects are taught and learned in a language that is not generally the learners' mother tongue. ●The knowledge of the language becomes the means of learning content. ●Language is more or less integrated into the broad curriculum. ●Learning is improved through increased motivation and studying natural language in context. ●Whenever the learners are interested in a topic, they are motivated to acquire language to communicate. ●CLIL is generally based on language acquisition rather than enforced learning. ●Language is seen in real-life situations in which students can learn the language. ●CLIL is a long-term learning. Students become proficient in English after 5 to 7 years of a bilingual program. ●Fluency is more important than accuracy and error as a natural learning process. Learners can develop fluency in English through communication. ●For this, reading is an essential skill that needs to be enhanced. The Advantages of CLIL: Content and Language Integrated learning help to: ●Introduce the cultural context in the wider sense. ●Prepare for the process of internationalization. ●Help access the international certification and enhance the school profile. ●Develop and improve specific language competence. ●Help in the preparation for future studies. ●Upgrade multilingual interests and attitudes. ●Enable diversification of methods and forms of classroom teaching and learning. ●Enhance learner motivation. CLIL in the classroom It is assumed that through CLIL, subject teachers can exploit opportunities for language learning. The best and the most opportunities are through reading text. CLIL generally draws on lexical approaches, encouraging learners to notice language while reading. In conclusion, CLIL is a method of teaching language by integrating content into lessons. Students are learning not just the language but also other subject knowledge simultaneously.
