Feedback is information that you give to your students that helps them close the gap between where they are now with their work, and where they could be. Whereas Reinforcement can be used to teach new skills, teach a replacement behavior for an interfering behavior, increase appropriate behaviors, or increase on-task behavior. FEEDBACK 1. Helping to clarify what good performance is- Students require goals, criteria, expected standards for which they can assess their progression. 2. Effective feedback facilitates the development of self assessment and reflection in learning- This principle is centred on the idea that learners need to focus more on the gaps between their current performance and their personal aims. 3. Effective feedback delivers high quality information to students about their learning- Good quality feedback helps students enhance their own performance. REINFORCEMENT 1. Reinforcement can be both negative and positive- Positive reinforcement is based on the principle that by consolidating expected behaviors in students, students will tend to act according to our expections. And negative reinforcement is a method that can be used to help teach specific behaviors. 2. Timing- Immediate reinforcement, provided right after the desired behavior, is more effective in strengthening that behavior. Delayed reinforcement can be weaken the association between the behavior and the reward, making it less effective. 3. Consistency- The consistency of reinforcement refers to how reliably a behavior is reinforced over time. Consistent reinforcement leads to stronger learning and behavior maintenance, as individuals clearly associate their actions with the expected outcomes.
