Holistic Report Card According to NEP 2020
By MAINABORO • 2025-06-04 00:00:00
The progress card of all students for school-based assessment, which is
communicated by schools to parents, will be completely redesigned by States/UTs
under guidance from the proposed National Assessment Centre, NCERT, and SCERTs.
The progress card will be a holistic, 360-degree, multidimensional report that reflects in great detail the progress as well as the uniqueness of each learner in the cognitive,
affective, and psychomotor domains. It will include self-assessment and peer
assessment, and progress of the child in project-based and inquiry-based learning,
quizzes, role plays, group work, portfolios, etc., along with teacher assessment. The
holistic progress card will form an important link between home and school and will be accompanied by parent-teacher meetings in order to actively involve parents in their children’s holistic education and development. The progress card would also provide teachers and parents with valuable information on how to support each student in and out of the classroom. AI-based software could be developed and used by students to help track their growth through their school years based on learning data and interactive questionnaires for parents, students, and teachers, in order to provide students with valuable information on their strengths, areas of interest, and needed areas of focus, and to thereby help them make optimal career choices.
Key Elements of a Holistic Report Card According to NEP 2020:
1. Academic Performance:
Traditional grades will still be included, but there will be a shift towards assessments
that focus on understanding concepts rather than memorization. Assessments will be designed to measure skills like critical thinking, problem-solving, and conceptual clarity.
2. Skills Development:
NEP stresses the need for a curriculum that promotes 21st-century skills such as
communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking. The report card will likely reflect proficiency in these areas as well as subject-specific skills.
3. Social and Emotional Learning (SEL):
NEP emphasizes the importance of emotional well-being and mental health. The report card might include feedback on how well students manage emotions, collaborate with peers, and adapt to challenges. Emotional intelligence, empathy, and resilience will be key focus areas.
4. Co-scholastic and Extracurricular Activities:
The holistic report card will also account for participation in sports, arts, music, and
other co-curricular activities. Physical well-being, creativity, and leadership skills are key elements in the holistic assessment framework.
5. Physical Development
Fine motor skills: Hand-eye coordination, ability to hold a pencil, cut with scissors, or
complete simple tasks like buttoning clothing.
Gross motor skills: Physical activities that involve large muscle groups, such as running, jumping, or balancing.
5. Character Development:
NEP2020highlights the importance of nurturing values, ethics, and life skills. The report
card could assess attributes like responsibility, respect, and integrity. This is a step towards creating well-rounded individuals who contribute positively to society.
6. Continuous and Comprehensive Assessment (CCA):
The NEP suggests a move towards continuous assessment rather than relying solely on periodic exams. The report card would include assessments over time, including
feedback from teachers, peers, and self-reflections by students themselves.
7. Learner-Centric Evaluation:
The new evaluation system under NEP is designed to reduce stress by moving away
from high-stakes exams. It will focus on personalized feedback and growth over time,
helping students progress at their own pace.
8. Overall Development:
A holistic report card will provide a comprehensive view of a student's academic and
non-academic growth. This includes self-assessment and self-regulation, encouraging
students to take responsibility for their learning and development
